Creating a more inclusive construction and engineering sector requires more than opening doors. It requires a collective commitment to changing the structures, cultures and opportunities that shape the industry.
The construction and engineering sectors play a vital role in shaping the world around us. Yet, to meet the demands of the future, the industry must continue to challenge established barriers, broaden access to opportunities and ensure that people from different backgrounds can build rewarding, long-term careers.
Gender equality is an important part of that challenge. While progress is being made, improving female representation across the built environment requires sustained action, collaboration and a willingness to examine how the industry attracts, develops and retains talent.
For Designer Group, this is an important conversation for the future of our industry. As an engineering contractor operating across multiple markets and disciplines, we recognise the importance of developing a strong, diverse talent pipeline and creating an environment in which people can contribute, progress and reach their potential.
This commitment underpins our involvement as a founding partner of Constructing Equality Ireland, an initiative bringing together organisations and professionals from across the built environment to advance gender equality and support meaningful, lasting change.
Addressing the challenges facing the industry cannot be achieved by individual organisations working in isolation. It requires a shared understanding of the barriers that remain, an honest assessment of current practices and collaboration on solutions that can make a difference across the sector.
By bringing together perspectives from across the industry, Constructing Equality Ireland provides a platform to move beyond awareness and towards practical action. This includes examining opportunities to strengthen recruitment, improve career development and progression, and create more inclusive working environments.
For Designer Group, being a founding partner means contributing to that wider effort, sharing perspectives and supporting the development of solutions that benefit the industry as a whole.
On 6 October, Designer Group participated in the first Constructing Equality Ireland roundtable, joining industry professionals to discuss progress, persistent challenges and opportunities for greater collaboration.
The discussion highlighted the value of bringing different experiences and perspectives to the table. Understanding where barriers exist, what is already working and where further progress is needed is an important step towards identifying meaningful action.
The roundtable also forms part of a wider process to inform the development of a sector-wide Gender Equality Action Plan, due to be published in 2027. The insights gathered will help shape the next phase of the initiative, building a foundation for a more coordinated approach to change across the built environment.
Building a more inclusive industry is not simply about improving representation. It is about ensuring that opportunities are accessible, that talent can develop and progress, and that the industry is equipped to attract and retain the people it needs for the future.
That requires commitment at every level, from recruitment and education to project delivery, leadership and workplace culture. It also requires organisations to recognise that meaningful progress is an ongoing responsibility rather than a one-off initiative.
As a founding partner of Constructing Equality Ireland, Designer Group is proud to contribute to this collective effort. We recognise that lasting change takes time, accountability and collaboration, and that progress depends on organisations being willing to engage, learn and take action.
The future of construction and engineering will be shaped by the people who work within it. Creating an industry where more people can see a place for themselves, develop their capabilities and build successful careers is an important part of building that future.
Through our involvement in Constructing Equality Ireland, we look forward to supporting the next steps in this work and contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable future for the built environment.
