Celtic Interconnector

Siemens Energy
Cork, Ireland
400kV

Designer Group is working with Siemens Energy on the Celtic Interconnector project, a joint initiative between EirGrid and its French counterpart, Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE). The project will establish the first direct electricity link between Ireland and France, enabling the exchange of up to 700 megawatts (MW) of electricity across a 575km connection.

Mechanical installation works comprised the delivery of the converter water cooling system, including all associated equipment, installation activities, and integration works. This scope also included comprehensive testing and verification to confirm full operational performance, system reliability, and compliance with project specifications and relevant standards.

Electrical installation works encompassed the installation of 400 kV HVDC converter modules, 400 kV/220 kV converter transformers, and associated 400 kV DC and 220 kV AC switchyards. The scope also included 20 kV auxiliary transformers, full control and protection systems, ELV, LV and HV cabling with complete terminations, as well as earthing and lightning protection systems. All electrical systems were subject to thorough testing and verification to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operation.
