As part of its planned expansion in Donegal, the U.S. healthcare giant, Abbott, completed a €130 million investment in a new facility in Donegal town. Abbott is a long-established multinational employer in Ireland with almost 3,000 employees across nine sites and this expansion brought a further 500 jobs to Donegal.  

The company’s facility in Donegal is a centre of excellence for blood glucose monitoring. It manufactures FreeStyle® blood glucose monitoring strips for the global marketplace.  

Designer Group were awarded the electrical services package for the expansion project incorporating cleanroom installations, pharmaceutical status monitoring systems, communications and all other electrical systems.  

This project, the first phase, involved a major expansion within the existing plant to enable manufacture of a new diabetes product. Designer Group were responsible for the electrical installation of the supporting services and infrastructure for the new product manufacturing line. 

The plant remained fully operational throughout the construction works with a focus on direct client interaction to ensure no disruptions to the manufacturing operations in the facility. 

This was a 47–week programme and achieved practical completion in January 2019.
