Gary Byrne, Executive Director says “Our Energy & Industrial Business Unit brings together the best of Designer Group – our people, our innovation and our capability to deliver complex EPC projects that support the energy transition and industrial growth. We’re focused on providing integrated mechanical, electrical and civil solutions that create long-term value for our clients.”
In a rapidly changing energy landscape, Designer Group’s Energy, & Industrial Business Unit has become a cornerstone of the company’s five-year growth strategy, combining engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) capability with deep technical expertise across power, process and industrial sectors.
From high-voltage substations and grid connections to biomass energy plants and complex life sciences facilities, the team operates at the intersection of energy security, innovation and sustainability, supporting both utility providers and private developers.
Delivering Power Generation and Grid Infrastructure
Designer Group’s energy portfolio covers two distinct but complementary markets. In power generation, the company partners with developers and utility providers to deliver full EPC solutions for renewable and sustainable energy systems. Projects include large-scale biomass facilities across Africa and the USA, providing clients with reliable, low-carbon power while achieving tangible sustainability outcomes. Among them, carbon savings of 42,000 tonnes per year for a major drinks manufacturer in Mexico and enhanced plant efficiency in North Carolina, increasing output capacity from 70% to 82%.
In grid infrastructure, the team has successfully delivered substations and high-voltage systems that connect data centres and industrial clients to the national grid. Recent highlights include the Echelon Data Centre substation, a major European data centre and the Celtic Interconnector Project, the first direct electricity link between Ireland and France, strengthening Ireland’s energy security and supporting renewable integration.
Engineering Capability Backed by Experience
This broad capability is underpinned by an experienced leadership team who bring deep technical knowledge and delivery excellence to every project.
Together, they embody the collaborative approach that has defined the Energy & Industrial Business Unit integrating mechanical, electrical and civil capabilities to deliver complete EPC projects safely, efficiently and sustainably.
“The expansion of our Energy, & Industrial Business Unit is central to our five-year strategy,” says Paul Nicholls, Group Managing Director. “It demonstrates our commitment to investing in leadership and capability that will allow us to deliver large-scale, technically complex projects across multiple markets, from power generation to life sciences and beyond.”
With a growing portfolio across power generation, grid infrastructure and Data Centre facilities, Designer Group continues to deliver the systems that power progress, helping clients build more resilient and sustainable operations for the future.
