Earlier this year our former interns, Diarmuid Green and David Monahan, embarked on an international placement in one of our UK offices. Motivated to pursue new challenges in a different environment and gain exposure to large scale international projects, they embraced the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

Having now completed their internships, they have shared valuable insights into how this experience has contributed to their development and shaped their career aspirations.

Diarmuid’s Experience

What motivated you to take the internship abroad?

I was really motivated to push myself and get out of my comfort zone. Moving to London for my internship was a huge deal. I also wanted to see how a big company like Designer Group operates. I was interested in the day-to-day activities and how they handle important projects. Getting a chance to learn and gain some independence in another country was a big part of my decision.

How has your experience been working with the Designer Group UK team?

It’s been absolutely amazing. The team is so great. I felt welcomed from the very first day. I’ve gotten to work closely with some incredible people who have taught me so much. They’ve been great mentors and have really helped me learn the ropes professionally. They even took me to a couple of football games, one at Wimbledon and one at Millwall.

What impact has this internship had on your learning and career aspirations?

This internship has had a huge impact on me. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that hard work really pays off.

I’ve been able to see the direct results of my efforts.

This experience has also made me see a clear path for myself in the construction industry. I can definitely see myself working in project management now.

David’s Experience

What motivated you to take the internship abroad?

After visiting my friend in London in January 2024 and hearing about his own internship experience, I knew I was keen to try organising something similar for myself.

I wanted the chance to gain international experience and challenge myself by working in a new setting.

I also felt that an internship abroad would broaden my perspective and give me exposure to opportunities that I might not encounter at home.

How has your experience been working with the Designer Group UK team?

My experience with the Designer Group UK team was excellent; their support and expertise stood out throughout the project. I also worked closely with the client’s UK team. The team were welcoming, supportive, and always willing to share their knowledge. I had the opportunity to take on real responsibilities while also learning from experienced individuals, which has helped me develop both technically and professionally.

What impact has this internship had on your learning and career aspirations?

The internship has given me a much clearer picture of what a career in engineering can look like, particularly in the construction space. I’ve built on my technical skills, but also learned about project management, teamwork, and communication in a professional setting. It’s reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in energy systems and construction engineering.

Through our internship and graduate programmes, we open pathways to personal and professional growth. By offering opportunities to work abroad, we give future engineers the chance to gain international exposure, expand their skills, and build lasting foundations for their careers.
